California Authorities Seize $20 Million in Illegal Cannabis from Oakland Warehouse

12 March 2025

California authorities seized over $20 million worth of illegal cannabis from an unlicensed grow operation inside a West Oakland warehouse, uncovering over 25,000 plants, firearms, and illegal pesticides. The raid, conducted by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Department of Cannabis Control (DCC), stemmed from a cargo theft investigation that led officers to the massive illicit cultivation site. Officials determined the warehouse was operating as a "clone factory," likely supplying young plants to other illegal sites. No arrests have been made, but investigators continue to probe the operation’s origins.

The seizure highlights the ongoing challenge of black-market cannabis operations undermining California’s legal marijuana business. Unlicensed cultivation not only diverts billions of dollars away from state-regulated dispensaries but also raises public health concerns due to untested products and environmental risks from illegal pesticide use. While enforcement efforts have led to nearly 800 tons of illicit cannabis being seized since 2019, experts suggest that until stricter regulations and enforcement are implemented, the black market will continue to compete with the legal industry, impacting pricing and overall market stability.
